Donald Duck, where are your pants?

Thursday, February 9th, 2006

i heard on the radio once (about a couple of years ago) that there was this one country (i forgot which one) that wanted to ban all Donald Duck cartoons from television. Their reason: according to them, Donald Duck is a vulgar character because he struts around without any pants on! Yup, they do not appreciate the fact that Donald Duck has a mind enough to wear a jacket but has forgotten to put on his pants. They do not find his exposed tail feathers cute, as i do.

now admittedly, Donald Duck might not be one of the best cartoon characters out there. I mean, you can hardly understand half the things he says, right? but to decide to ban him from television because he does not have any pants on is, in my opinion, a bit much. i dont know how different things are now but when i was a kid, i never even noticed that he needed to have pants on. His a duck after all!

I guess things have changed quite a bit since i used to watch cartoons. Well, kids are so different nowadays too. but it’s a case of chicken or the egg for me. are cartoons different to adjust to how kids are now? or are kids different because what they watch is different? i remember when cartoons were just purely for entertainment. but now, there’s all these elements of political correctness and social awareness injected in the storyline. there’s all these underlying meanings that i doubt children can fully understand. it’s like they’re trying to brainwash kids while they still can. I’m not saying that it’s all bad. i’m just saying that maybe, children aren’t given enough time anymore to enjoy being a child. to think about kids’ stuff. to play for no other reason but to have fun. to enjoy the the sheltered life while they still can. When i was a kid, grown-ups used to say that i shouldn’t be in a hurry to grow-up. i wonder if kids now are being rushed.

I just finished watching the series Taken and in it, one of the characters said that children should not have to worry about anything more complicated than baseball. It’s just like saying that kids should be given their chance to enjoy the game or play while it lasts. Afterall, they’ll be missing it when they grow-up. just like i do… :)
